Meditation through the Ages
Meditation can be traced back to 3,000 B.C. The use of chanting and eye-fixation exercises, in early rituals in India and China, was thought to summon the assistance of the gods. We see similar beliefs and invocations used by the Celts and Christians as well as Greeks and Romans up until the eighteenth century.
In 1893, in Chicago, the World Parliament of Religions gathered at the World Columbian Exposition and it was there that Swami Vivekananda introduced Americans to Zen Buddhism. It underscored the notion that from the meditative experience, which included developing concentrated focus and clearing of the mind, the practitioner could have access to the source of all religious understanding and wisdom.
